Today I got the rear drive shafts all put back together with new
u-joints and rubber gaiters.
That's the good news.

Issue 1

As I was extending/compressing the two shafts together, I noticed that
the rubber gaiter would "suck in" as I was extending the shaft,
distorting the shape.
This must indicate that the inside is air tight.

Is this OK? I guess I fear that some rubber may get caught in the shaft
as it compresses.

Issue 2

Of the 4 big bolts that stick out from the rear hub, (the ones that the
wire wheel mount bolts up to) some are stripped.
I am planning on running a dye in an attempt to clean the threads, but
if this is unsuccessful, how do you replace them?
It looks as if they can be removed with a firm strike from a big hammer;
but I am beginning to learn that things are rarely that easy.
If I can remove them, from where can I get replacement? If I can't, do
I have to replace the whole hub?

Seems intuitive to me that these would have been engineered to be
replaced.

Peace be with you!
