Hey Jim,
This is not uncommon. These radiators were marginal at best when new.
First verify the temp with a thermometer, although your description
seemed pretty clear that it was overheating. The most common preliminary
steps are as follows,
1) back flush the system
2) Use a summer thermostat (160`)
3) Proper mix of anti-freeze 50/50. More than a 50/50 mix can lower the
boiling temp of the system.
4) Make sure there are no leaks. Air leaks depressurize the system and
again affect cooling .
5) Check hoses carefully. Hoses can collapse internally and obstruct
water flow.
6) make sure the water pump is spinning freely and no drips from the
weep hole.
7) additives like "Water Wetter" help a little.
8) make sure the ign timing is not set overly retarded.
If after all those steps have been covered with little or no improvement
a re-core or replacement is in order. Electric fan additions is a
popular solution to hot day traffic jams. Pusher or puller work fine for
me. I have not seen any real differences in performance between the two.
