They are wrong, have them prove it to you.  A lot of cars didn't have cats
in '75.  I had a '76 Trans Am back then and '76 was the first year on that
car (at least for the 455 V8) for the cat.  If they won't budge then go to a
different station.  You also might try showing them the factory service
mannual and they should notice that the US supplement doesn't discuss cats.
Your car should have an emissions sticker.  I've got a '76 TR6 and the
emission sticker on the driver side door jamb states something to the effect
that "the vehicle complies with all US emission standards except for coarbon
monoxide in California"  then in big letters it states "Non Catalyst".  Good
