The finned aluminum pan was an option that could be purchased thru the
Triumph Dealers for folks who were into performance such as racing, hill
climbs or autocrossing. It did increase the oil capacity and provided some
cooling via the fins. It is a very desirable part especially for someone
into performance. The windage tray fits between the block and the pan (you
need to use 2 gaskets, one above and one below) and is there to prevent the
oil from climbing up one side or the other of the block in corners as well
as to help scavenge the oil that gets thrown around by the crankshaft as the
engine runs. If your pan is installed on the engine look closely at the
joint between the pan and the engine. If you see 2 gaskets and a thin metal
piece between the pan and the engine you have a windage tray. Stock TR pans
have a tray as well but it's welded to the pan and is quite evident when
looking at a pan which is not installed on the engine.
New finned pans are being reproduced but I don't know if they come supplied
with a windage tray. They are expensive and your original one has value. If
you decide to sell place it on E-Bay, you might be surprised at it's value.

What is the windage tray? There is nothing below or around the pan, it is
just there. Are you thinking this is an oversize pan from a TR4 on this
engine?
BTW, the engine is not original to this car as it carries number: TS-71465E.
The previous owner thought it might be a TR4 engine but I am inclined to
think the number is closer to a late TR3A 60 or 61, with engine and
commission numbers not matching I dont know how to check this out to be
positive of what I really have. Do you know of any other clues to look for
to date it?

The plugged hole half way up the side of the finned oil pan is for an oil
temperature gauge if you want to install one. I have one on my TR4A. If you
plan on using the pan you should have the windage tray that comes with it as
well. Anyone who wants more information can write to me.
