Once again, Dick, I agree completely. Most participants will do only the leg closest to home. A fee of over $45 USD is too high.
Practical issues, raised by Dick: 1) events planners need numbers: we have none. 2) while we can get registrants to send fees to a central JONAT point 3) now that the suggestion of a common JONAT kit has been made, exactly how are these to be distributed to participants? I doubt that SC want to be in the business of receiving boxes of things and having to distribute them especially as, again, we have no numbers. The cost of sending these things would be prohibitive. 4) why not let each sector decide what *if anything* they want to produce for their participants? 5) the advantages: JONAT central can respond by mail to registrants, sending them confirmation and a decal or other mailable thing.
A kit is a nice idea, but largely unworkable, and adds significantly to both costs and logistics.
In my next life, I do NOT want to be the curmudgeon. But sometimes reality has to intrude. Or have I missed some esssntial point that makes all this both fun and workable?

$65 sounds high to me, since I think many participants will jump on the tour as it passes near their home, and jump off after a pleasant, but relatively short, drive. A high fee would discourage these drivers' participation. Is there any indication of how many folks plan on doing more than a short regional leg or two?

Re: Greg's question on fee collection -- It seems to me that a single low general tour fee ($45 or less) might be adequate to cover all organizational expenses (hats, badges, printing), eliminating the need for any sector fees. A set amount from the general fund could be forwarded to each SC to draw from to cover regional printing expenses. If there is a special sector 'event' scheduled which required funds to implement, then I could see collecting a small participation fee from just the people who want to attend that event at the time the event takes place; those that choose not to attend the event wouldn't pay this fee.

At this point in time, having no input on the number of participants, it is difficult to schedule an event. More information is needed to come up with a decent proposal.

    Dick.

      Dick

The idea is to keep things simple as this is an all volunteer effort. The simplest thing if for JONAT central to collect it's fees, and the sectors to collect theirs, so one flat fee I think would be less manageable for us volunteers (much better, however, for the participants) if we had to dole out money based on requests from the Sectors. My own personal opinion is that the Sectors need to collect and manage their own finances.

I suppose if we collect $65 for the tour, rather than $45, and send the extra $20 to the participants' home sector, this might be workable. We need to keep it a fixed amount though to keep it simple. How does that sound as an alternative ...

        Bob,

As I look at this some more, the question keeps popping up....What is the rationale for doing both central and sector fees? Wouldn't it be more manageable to have just one flat fee for participation in the tour, which would be the same for everyone, regardless of the number of sectors travelled? So what if people travelling multiple sectors get more bang for their buck? This would enable all of the money to all be funneled into one place (central committee) where it could be managed basically by one person. If SC's need funds for approved requests, the central committee would then simply disperse the reimbursements from this pot and always know exactly where things stand financially.

I've put some thought into this lately, and have come up with Tour fees collected centrally, and Sector fees collected by the Sector. The downside to this is people will be sending their money all over the place, the upside is it keeps it distributed, with no monies passing between central and/or the sectors. This might not be the best way though ... any other thoughts?

We will probably also need fairly quickly a couple of registration people, one for the US, and one for CANADA. Jamie/Fazal comments? I have started to put together some registration pages at http://jonat.org/bob/RegistrationForm/RegistrationPageTest.htm if you want to see how things are going on this ... note that when you submit your registration by e-mail it does not work yet.
