Consider that the expense for some days on the road -- meals, fuel,=20
room, drinks, entertainment -- will be many times $65.00. In some =
places
here in California, the cheap hotel will be more than $120. Our SF leg =
is=20
6 nights, including $$an Lui$ Obispo, Monterey$$$, $$an Franci$co,=20
$$t Helena (Napa Valley). Bring plenty of dough!
If a $65.00 fee scares some people off, they have not been thinking=20
about what the real costs will be.
A single price for the tour will not cover the costs (if any) for =
individual
segments. SCs may be willing to absorb it, I guess, but it's a
truly noble gesture... Any sector offering a pin will have to pay for=20
that somehow. The idea was that those participating in a sector
will get a sector pin, not everyone get every pin. Of course we can=20
skip that feature. If you want to do it, though, every participant
will pay for a pin on every sector they run, or the SCs will. I prefer
not to sell pins on spec.
Printing of handbooks will probably be a no-cost item. =20
User pays for events, meals, everything else.
Of course, each SC can get a sponsor who will pay for sector costs --=20
but what advertising return do they get for their investment? Others =
have
ideas here?

$65 sounds high to me, since I think many participants will jump on =
the tour as it passes near their home, and jump off after a pleasant, =
but relatively short, drive. A high fee would discourage these drivers' =
participation. Is there any indication of how many folks plan on doing =
more than a short regional leg or two? =20
Re: Greg's question on fee collection -- It seems to me that a =
single low general tour fee ($45 or less) might be adequate to cover all =
organizational expenses (hats, badges, printing), eliminating the need =
for any sector fees. A set amount from the general fund could be =
forwarded to each SC to draw from to cover regional printing expenses. =
If there is a special sector 'event' scheduled which required funds to =
implement, then I could see collecting a small participation fee from =
just the people who want to attend that event at the time the event =
takes place; those that choose not to attend the event wouldn't pay this =
fee. =20
At this point in time, having no input on the number of =
participants, it is difficult to schedule an event. More information is =
needed to come up with a decent proposal. =20
Dick.

Dick
The idea is to keep things simple as this is an all volunteer =
effort. The simplest thing if for JONAT central to collect it's fees, =
and the sectors to collect theirs, so one flat fee I think would be less =
manageable for us volunteers (much better, however, for the =
participants) if we had to dole out money based on requests from the =
Sectors. My own personal opinion is that the Sectors need to collect =
and manage their own finances.
I suppose if we collect $65 for the tour, rather than $45, and =
send the extra $20 to the participants' home sector, this might be =
workable. We need to keep it a fixed amount though to keep it simple. =
How does that sound as an alternative ...

Bob,
As I look at this some more, the question keeps popping =
up....What is the rationale for doing both central and sector fees? =
Wouldn't it be more manageable to have just one flat fee for =
participation in the tour, which would be the same for everyone, =
regardless of the number of sectors travelled? So what if people =
travelling multiple sectors get more bang for their buck? This would =
enable all of the money to all be funneled into one place (central =
committee) where it could be managed basically by one person. If SC's =
need funds for approved requests, the central committee would then =
simply disperse the reimbursements from this pot and always know exactly =
where things stand financially. =20

I've put some thought into this lately, and have come up with =
Tour fees collected centrally, and Sector fees collected by the Sector. =
The downside to this is people will be sending their money all over the =
place, the upside is it keeps it distributed, with no monies passing =
between central and/or the sectors. This might not be the best way =
though ... any other thoughts?
We will probably also need fairly quickly a couple of =
registration people, one for the US, and one for CANADA. Jamie/Fazal =
comments? I have started to put together some registration pages at =
http://jonat.org/bob/RegistrationForm/RegistrationPageTest.htm if you =
want to see how things are going on this ... note that when you submit =
your registration by e-mail it does not work yet.
