Well, this is all pure B.S. and the car companies should be run out of town
because of it.
Back in the early 70's, Chrysler made the Torqueflite which was the best
automatic ever made. GM had the Turbo 400 which was close. These were tough
transmissions that handled a lot of power and never caused any problems.
(Ironically Ford was having trouble with their C4 and C6 transmissions even
back then.) Torqueflites were widely used in drag racing, even to the extent
of putting a clutch in front of them in place of the torque converter and
putting them in drag cars behind big V8's. A guy that worked in my dad's
garage raced an asphalt track car, sort of like a beginning Nascar racer. He
ran a GM automatic in that car. It had a solid spool in it in place of the
torque converter, and an external valve that you closed to pressurize the
clutches and make it hook up.
Now 30 years later, you can't trust the automatics from most car
manufacturers.
