With a manual trans I don't think you can keep the input shaft from turning a
little. Even with the clutch pedal down there is probably some friction
between against the pressure plate that will cause it to want to turn if
there is nothing to restrain it. It would be safer to put fluid in the
trans. This shouldn't be a problem. I have pulled both axles out of my
trans with the car setting level and no fluid leaked out. Of course you
could always stuff a couple of rags in there.
