I can take that one step further. The engine attached to a bellhousing
(normal) but the Differential was bolted to the other side of the
bellhousing and the transmission was bolted in front (towards the front of
the car) of that. The transmission input shaft ran through the
differential. So, if you think that the rear of the engine is where the
transmission mounts... Where does THAT leave you?

I recall that the pulley faces the rear of the car (at the end of the crank)
on that flat 6. The top was a fan assy with a pulley on a horizontal line.
At the rear top corner of the engine, there were two idlers to allow 1 belt
to run the route.
Amazing, useless information remaining in my brain.
