The worst mileage I've ever gotten was during a track day - about 100 miles
of track driving, and I got 9.5 mpg. Mind you, this was 100 miles of WOT,
hard braking, WOT, repeated many, many times. : ) The best mileage I've
gotten is 30 mpg, and I get this once in awhile when I'm on long trips on
the freeway and can avoid mashing the pedal. I average about 18-20 mpg in
town and 25-30 mpg on the open road.

Not too bad for a mid-size, older, V6 sedan! The friend of mine with a
Contour SVT is lucky to get above 22 mpg on the open road. His mileage is
about the same as mine around town, yet he has shorter gears (probably why
his highway mpg sucks), a newer engine, and less weight. Another friend of
mine with a Focus ZX3 gets the same mileage I get around town, and once in
awhile gets 30 mpg on the freeway in a 4-banger! Come to think of it, my
SHO is the least thirsty car out of all my friends, and will spank them all
in a straight line! : )
