RPM is important when talking about hp numbers. All hp is, is a math
equation of torque and rpm. What was the peak torque on those motors?
All you have to do is make decent torque at 7500 rpm to get "300 hp" but
what does the whole torque curve look like? In a 3400 lb car like the SHO,
it wouldn't help much to have a dog till 5000 rpm. Both those cars are
lighter than the SHO. It's hard (or impossible!) to build a small
displacement n/a motor that makes a great peak hp number, as well as a GOOD
flat even torque curve. Goes back to "all 300 hp motors aren't created
equal".
My 3.2L on the dyno (with modest bolt ons) makes 215 ft/lbs at the tires, or
say 260 ft/lbs at the crank. From 195 CI, that's almost what, 1.35 ft/lb
per cube. Very few engines today can do that. Peak hp is only about the
same (260 hp or so) but with the ability to make within 80% of it's torque
over a huge rpm range, and decent gearing, it'll run with cars that have
"more" hp (most cars that have a driver/car weight of 3300 lb, with only
255-260 hp, can't high 13's at ~100 mph).
re the 3.4L stroker... I think the "phantom" 3.4L (phantom till John H. gets
off his butt and gets those engine pieces to the machine shop :) would run
my 89 in the 1/4 around 13.50 @ 104-105 mph.
