[Shotimes] OT - ISDN Anyone?

With my cable service I can get an average of 150 to 300 KB (yes, KBytes,
not bits) transfer speed on downloads. Go to a high bandwidth server like
Microsoft and it jumps to over 500 KB per second. My friend's DSL service
limits him to 80 KB, max. Averages out to 50 KB. I've downloaded 190 MB
files (Rise of Nations demo just last week) and it took me 17 minutes to
download. My friend on his DSL took him over half an hour. I was already
playing it while he was still downloading. I wouldn't trade my cable for
DSL for anything. As for ISDN, we had it at our office 'til cable came
along in a business package. Dedicated 128K ISDN lines for our servers. It
wasn't bad and to be honest the speed averaged out to what my friend gets on
his DSL, or close to it. The cost was prohibitive and the main reason we
switched. Our DSL isn't the greatest up my way, though. Still too new
compared to other formats like cable and ISDN, and I'm hoping it gets
better. The "5 o'clock" syndrome on cable is my only complaint. Well, that
and tech support. Lousy tech support at Telus.

Just my 2 cents...

You're talking 2 different things.

DSL speed is quoted in kbits per second, i.e. 500 kbits per second. When
you download through internet explorer you get a reading of kbytes per
second, and 50kbytes per second is par for DSL. I used to know the
conversion when dealing with a modem, considering data bits, stop bits,
etc., but I don't know how similar it is for internet transmission. I get a
little better than this with my home cable, and about 4 times this at work.
