[Shotimes] tranny troubles

If you mean 4 gears counting overdrive, you're correct.

I believe what you're experiencing is lack of torque convertor lockup.
It can actually feel like another gear, but it's not. I believe the
torque convertor is prevented from locking until the tranny fluid
reaches a certain temperature. In my car, for example, it takes 8-10
minutes in the winter. In the summer, only a couple.

How far do you drive to school? If it's less than 10 miles, even on the
highway, it wouldn't be that strange for it to not lockup. FYI, at
80mph, mine tends to run at 3200rpms before lockup and 2800rpms after.
Also, FYI, if you were going 70mph in 3rd gear you'd be a bit higher
than 3000rpms ;^)

If you want to learn a bit more on basic torque convertor
design/operation, check out
http://www.howstuffworks.com/torque-converter.htm. Excellent read for
those who know nothing (like me).

Hey all

93 atx with 115k transmisson never rebuilt and fluid never
changed.
Driving the highway to school i sometimes don't have my last gear so the
car
will cruise at 70 mph at about 3k rpm. Does this fall under the faq
about
4th gear not working. This only seems to happen when the car is cold
but
with cold in the northeast the tranny is taking longer to warm up but
it
will shift into the last gear eventually. How many gears does the atx
have
anyway......4 with overdrive.
