This is a common problem, and probably isn't related to the AC, or vacuum.
The vent/defrost door is controlled by a vacuum motor; with a cheesy plastic
handle/pin. This will break, causing no end of grief. To check for that,
go behind the glove box, and look to the left while operating the panel and
defrost buttons with the fan on. You should see some action, also you can
reach in there and move the door up and down. The fix is a little more
difficult; like George I just put a manual handle on it so I can put it
where I want it to go.
