[Shotimes] Now (OT) rollovers

I was just thinking about the explorers with the blow outs just this
past weekend. 2 years ago I was driving my mom's explorer to my aunt's
house in middle New York. I got a blow out while crossing the Hudson
River on the Beacon Bridge. The "truck" felt very squirrelly, wanting
to fish tail, but I was able to drive it fine off the bridge, through
the toll booth and up the nearest exit ramp to a side street. The tire
managed to stay on the rim but was completely flat with a rather large
gash across the tread, most likely from something like aluminum roof
flashing. All this happened while in the rain doing about 55-60 mph.
I'd never been to a driving school or even a track event, but I was able
to keep control with no problem and just a light touch on the wheel and
gently slowing down. This is the only flat tire I've ever had while
driving, but I don't see why people have been killed in their explorer,
unless they completely lost the tire off the rim, and the rim bit the
pavement.

One of the most basic driving skills is to gently let the car slow down,
and
gently turn the wheel to get it back on the road if a wheel drops off
the
pavement.

It seems like at LEAST once a month around here, someone gets killed
because
a wheel drops off, they crank the wheel, and then they dart across the
road
into (1) oncoming traffic, (2) the center barrier, or (3) some other
dumbass
driving parallel to them that doesn't know enough to slow down and get
behind them when they go off-road.

C&D has done tests with a tire blowout on an Explorer, and had no
problems
stopping the vehicle.....even with their hands off the wheel. Brock
Yates
blew a rear tire on his Wagoneer awhile back, and pulled off the road
with
no issues.

99%+ of this stuff is driver error. On the bright side, it also "thins
the
herd"!!

Without getting into the whole SUV debate....I would say some or all
of
those crashes COULD have been avoided if the person behind the wheel
actually knew how to drive (was trained in basic car control, etc).
Personally I think what you have to do (or DON'T have to do!) to get
a
permit to drive a car is a joke. Ride around a parking lot and park in
between some cones. oooooh. Heaven forbid we teach somebody how to
make an
aggressive move at 75 mph and maintain control of the 5000 lb vehicle
they
are piloting.
