Not necessarily, depends whether any/how much coolant hits the cylinders. Or
maybe a couple of busted rings.

I have this "gut feeling" that the car overheated on him and he ain't
tellin'!!

I had thought about that.  The head gaskets were replaced less than
2k miles ago, before the engine was put in.  Doesn't mean it was done
correctly though.  You'd most likely smell burning antifreeze in the
exhaust and/or see water/frothing in the oil though wouldn't you?
