I would guess that the synchro for first gear is weak. What you can usually
do is to stop the clutch disk and the car before you shift into first gear.
This is what you should usually do with reverse anyway. What I do is to back
the car out and leave it in reverse until I have stopped. At this time the
clutch disk is stopped and all the gears in the trans are stopped. When you
change to first, nothing is rotating so nothing grinds. Sometimes you can't
do this without holding up traffic a little, but you might also try changing
your speed when shifting gears. I noticed with my car that in colder weather
I have to slow down my shifting to give the synchros a little more time to
work before I go all the way into gear. You might try this with your car and
it might help.
