Leaving the center caps off won't hurt anything at all. Mine were off for
about a year since I was always doing work on it or racing it, and I didn't
want to break them by constantly removing and installing them.
Even with the center caps on, water still finds it's way in there. If you
live in the rust belt, it might be a good idea to coat the threads with a
little grease to make removal of the axle nuts easier in the future, but out
here we don't have to worry about that. : )
IMHO, the wheels look pretty good with the center caps off except for the
ugly front axle sticking out. It's not that noticeable though.
