Ok I let this thread go long enough and no ones said this. Virus Protectors
are for people that do stupid things like run suspicious executables. They
seriously slow your machine down if they're protecting anything. You should
realize that they scan EVERY DAMN EXECUTIBLE before it is run, unless
they're set in scan all mode, and then they scan EVERY SINGLE FILE ACCESSED.
Just think how much this slows your computer down?
"Oh but I have a 2.4 Athlon, it can't slow that down." Yes it can and it
does. Turn that stupid program off for a day and then see how much faster
things launch or load files. A virus protector is unnecessary if you're not
being stupid. The reason companies have virus protectors on all of their
computers is because the IT guys realized it would save them a whole lot of
headache if they just prevented the stupid users from infecting their
computers. At all the local universities and colleges there are virus
protectors on the machines......I wonder why? There is a place for virus
protectors........on a computer that is going to be used by someone who
doesn't really use computers.
Someone also said something about their virus protector having a boot sector
virus scanning.................um, I haven't seen a BIOS since the early 90s
that didn't have built in boot sector virus scanning.....oh wait, that's
free and built in to your computer regardless of OS.
Let me lay this down real simple-like. If you can resist opening random
files found online, or are competent enough to use a virus scanner to
selectively scan suspicious files, then you have NO need for a virus
protector as all it will do is slow you and your system down. If you have
no idea what I'm talking about and worry about getting a virus, go ahead get
a virus protector you'll need one.
Lastly, someone else said something in regards to the anti-virus companies
scare tactics. That's what they are kids, scare tactics. Do you all have
even the FAINTEST clue as to how big the AV industry is? Realize that
McAffee is in just about EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL in this country that has
computers in it. They get paid a license fee for EACH computer their
software gets installed on. How many computers are there total in all the
schools in this country..................get the picture? It's in their
best interest to hype up the fear of viri and get the system to buy into it.
It's more geek technobabble designed to scare the unknowing into spending
money.
Anyway, you want a REAL anti-virus, go get F-Prot for DOS. It's FREE, and
because it's for DOS it can be run from the command line after booting with
an emergency boot disk (incase a virus is responsible for your OS not
booting). It's also about twice as fast as any windows based virus scanner.
