Bruce M: "The only thing I hear about adding siping to tires has to do with
off road vehicles, like Jeeps and such cause it allows better mud shedding and
grip on weird surfaces. I know a friend of mine spent a night siping his rear
tires on his jeep."
Back in the "Jurassic", JC Whitney used to sell an electric tire siping iron,
basically like a mondo soldering gun. The tip heats up so you can groove the
tires by melting the rubber. They probably still have 'em in the Big Mudder
kind of catalogs for monster tire devotees. Roadracers -- you, too, can turn
your slix into rain tires while waiting out a mid-race rain delay!
Speaking of roadracers, they had a massive "Quota Day" speeding crackdown on
my main commute road yesterday, biggest one I've ever seen. Ten separate
speed traps within five miles! Including two of the "surveying team" stratagems.
One of them was at the bottom of a big dip and they were pickin' off the
other-way traffic as cars came around the curve at the top of the hill a quarter
mile off. The cop walked out into the oncoming traffic stream, stopped 'em
all in the road and pulled five of 'em into the parking lot where they had a
desk sergeant sitting behind a card table, no shit! I was cracking up. The pack
of cars I was in was all going 5mph below the 40-45 limit and not a one of
them dared to break out of it to go the actual limit! Good doggies.
