[Shotimes] 96 SHO Brakes

The lighter pedal / increased braking torque was the major benefit of the
upgraded Z pad compound. The smaller 601 Z pads will outperform the larger
598 Regular PF pads by a decent margin. We are talking a 10-20% torque
increase here. The whole "correct" 598 pad issue is blown way out of
proportion. The extra 1/4 inch amounts to less than a 10% increase in pad
surface area, and it is on the inside edge of the pad, so the torque effect
is only 25% what it would be on the outer edge. Put simply, the 598s won't
make your car stop any faster, or the pedal any lighter, or the pads run any
cooler. What they will do is wear a little longer. Maybe 2-5%.
Bottom line: Find a pad compound you like first, then see if you can get it
in the larger 598 size, but don't sweat it. Both sizes fit properly, so you
really have 2 choices. That just expands your choices of available pad
compounds.Take advantage of it.
Sorry for the sermon, but the physics just don't jive with the popular myth
that 601 pads are "no good".
Personally I wanted my cake and icing too, so I am running Porterfield R4S
in the 598 size. They give up only a little torque to PF-Z or Carbotech F,
but barely dust. They are way better than the standard PF in friction and
dusting, which were originally compounded for taxi service, not performance.
That's why they wear like iron.
