oh lol! the caddy v8-6-4! early to mid-80's IIRC. It was a cool idea, but
the computing power needed to run such a system wasn't available then. now,
the computer power is here to be able to control it, and the technology is
available to be able to control individual valves (like variable valve
timing). this is the next big leap for trucks/suvs, and we should be seeing
more of this system in the future.
