Thank you.....

I was not being vain...please don't anyone think that.

I was as pleased with the economy and performance I got out of those cars as I am of
what I get now. I just didn't want to be included in the bulk of polluters that
were definitely out there, just because I had big cars.

My dad was a perfect example of a polluter. He could not hold his foot steady on
the throttle of his '61 T-bird....it went up and down, up and down. It drove me and
my mom NUTS. He averaged 10 mpg. I told him to pull over, and I'd drive, from the
time we got it new (I was 14) ...the problem had not shown up in any of the lower
powered cars we had. I wanted my first ordered car to be a 4 speed, and with the
'65 Galaxie 500 XL line the engine had to be a 289 or 390 for that to happen.
(Sorry...the 427 was not considered...too bad! It was about $500 extra....the 390
was about $150.) He thought the 390 was too big and wanted the 352. So I drove his
T-bird on a day long errand with the deal that if I got 20 mpg with it, I could have
the 390 (same engine in the T-bird). I got 21, and I proved it to him with the
receipts. He relented, and never nagged me about anything regarding driving or
working on cars again.
