[Shotimes] :( i think my '93 is dead

I think I've done something really bad. :(
Just less than a week ago, I got my bad IAB valve replaced, and my '93 has
been running beautifully. I do mostly short-distance (less than 2-3 miles
per day) city driving to/from work and school, but yesterday, I had to meet
my family about 30 miles down the interstate.
Halfway there, I stalled -- had to pull over to the side of the road. As I
came to a stop, there was white smoke coming from under the hood and a
burnt smell permeated the car. The engine was hot, hot, hot. Once it
cooled down for a bit, I checked the engine oil -- bone dry. I added 3
quarts and was able to make it back home, but there is a constant clicking
sound coming from the engine, and it's otherwise noisy and just not
producing any power without a lot of loud complaining. It sounds and feels
awful to drive.
I don't understand how this could happen. I've NEVER had any problem with
this car leaking or burning any oil, and I just had an oil change less than
3 weeks ago. How could I have been completely out of oil?
Is it hopeless? Worst-case scenerio, what kind of damage have I
done. Best-case? Arghh.. I just want to cry. I rely on this car very
heavily.
Help!
