Reinstallation to the correct torque is critical to keep it from coming
loose again, (at speed).
Or you may get George's crank cancer.
Torque is 120 ft lbs. (112-127).
And tightening it is no easy job.
I'd guess an insufficiently tightened bolt here is what winds up causing the
crank cancer.
Even with the car in gear, you'll need to use third or fourth (MTX) or
you'll move the car.
Parking brake, chock wheels, eat your wheaties, etc.
Big torque wrench and/or long breaker bar.
I've found the clutch dampner springs (disc hub) compress when doing this,
so you need like almost a 1/4-1/3 a turn of wrench rotation. Hard to swing
the wrench that far from above. Easier to do it from below, to give you more
room to swing the wrench. You get up to about 80 lbs, and it stops getting
tighter for a while, just keep turning. Tight is about 1/8 turn past the
point where you have compressed the clutch springs, and it starts to tighten
up again.
I do it from above, but do not use the starter.
If you clamp the flywheel some way, it is much easier to torque down.
(A big screwdriver works, through the hole where the starter goes)
Try it, and if you don't think you got it tight enough, pay someone a couple
bucks to check it to be sure.
I'd only drive it a few miles though.
Lee
PS: With an ATX, pull the starter.

New timing belt is in place. Two questions:

> 1. Crank pulley. I followed the instructions for removal (slide 19mm
socket on, rest breaker-bar handle on sub-frame, turn key) but I'm wondering
about reinstall. How much torque? Do I have to take measures to keep the
motor from turning?

against timing belt, tighten nut, turn motor 2 times, loosen nut and then
retighten. This info was according to distant memory of a helpful v8sho list
member. Does this sound right?
