Alan;
It's easier with 2 people.
Jack up the car, and have one person wiggle the tire as you describe.
Second person puts 1st & 2nd finger of the same hand on the suspect ball
joint, with each finger on a different side of the "joint".
You'll definately feel movement if it's bad.
