The only problem is that they don't last very long as a vacuum pump since
they are not receiving the oiling that they require from the refrigerant.

Refrigeration compressors out of refrigerators have been used for vacuum
pumps for a long time.  I used to read about this in "Scientific American"
magazine over 30 years ago.
