Jay, a significant amount of the heat coming off the muffler is radiant
energy, the heat shield really helps to block that and keep the pump
temperature lower. The best shield would be mounted about an inch above the
muffler, this will block the radiant heat, direct hot air away from the
pump and also allow air flow at speed to cool the muffler and the shield.

I have a high flow Holley pump on one of my Tigers and it hangs down
several inches below the original pump position but with a heat shield
installed there is no issue with overheating.
