Front Wheel Bearing Shims (Healey 3000s)

Query

I am getting ready to dig into the front wheel bearings on my BJ7. Can anyone give me an idea on how many of each size shim I should order, so that I will have the right combination to take the play out of each side?

There are three sizes you need -- 0.003, 0.005 and 0.010" I'd buy 6-8 of the two thinner sizes and 4 of the 0.010". It is CRITICAL that you get the correct diameter shims. They are larger for the 3000 MK I and II up through chassis #26704, and smaller in diameter after this. The smaller shims have been more commonly available -- the larger ones can be hard to locate. Also, if you are not abusive, you can probably reuse the originals. The only thing that damages them is bending or tearing because someone was not careful to make sure they seat over the spindle before sliding on the bearing. Finally, do all adjustment with the outer bearing DRY. This makes it much easier to take the bits out if you need to remove shims. When you get the distance set correctly as described in the shop manual you can then grease the outer bearing.
