Steve,

Sounds like your ammeter is working pretty much like I would guess,
if the generator is generating the power needed for the car, the current
to the battery should be near zero! How does it work if you turn the
lights on with the motor stopped?? Should be a big negative current.
After you start it after leaving the lights on for awhile, it should
have a pretty good positive current while its charging the battery back
up.
