    Actually it should have a pretty hefty positive defection just after
    starting under most circumstances because of the huge starter drain.

To conclude matters on the ammeter saga . . . Yes, it works
properly. It does have a 10-15 positive deflection after
starting, though it only lasts for a few seconds. I don't know
why it didn't do that when I firt hooked it up. Thanks again to
everyone who helped. This has been an example of how helpful
this list can be.
