Bad Influence

It just dawned on me. I've created a monster.

Back in late 1988/ early 1989, while scanning various car magazines,
I kept showing my girlfirend ( > fiancee > wife ) pictures of the not
yet released Mazda Miata. I consistently commented on how it looked
as if it would be a pretty neat machine when it was finally released
to the public. Of course, being somewhat practical in nature, I never
entertained the thought of owning one. Particularly because as the
release date drew nearer, the stories about big waiting lists and
tremendous dealer markups on the few cars to initially come over
      grew proportionally. No way !

Next thing I knew, she said she was gonna buy one. ( Yawn, yeah
.......right. ) I really didn't take it seriously. But true to her
word, she located a dealer in Glen Burnie who was getting some in
"soon", and would sell her one at list price. ( Which really was a
bargain at the time, as most dealers were getting $ 2000 to $ 5000
or more over list. ) In mid July,1989, she had her Miata.

A little later on down the old time line, I buy for her birthday, a
cellular phone to use " in case of emergencies, for her safety, etc.
But after a time, she uses the cellular phone to call and chit chat
with me, ....... at high $$$$$$$.

And somewhere in the midst of all this, I somehow instill in her the
fact that Sunbeam T's and A's are very cool machines.

      And so........

About 15 minutes ago, while cruising ( in her Miata ) west on I-70
through Ohio, she calls me ( on her cellular phone ) and says; "Hey,
that Sunbeam is still parked up on that hill with those other cars."
I shake my head, sigh, and reply ( in a classic case of role
reversal), " Honey, I don't really think that we need ANOTHER car".

      What a weird life.
