At the CAT swap meet this weekend, I picked up one of those valve covers
that says "Sunbeam" on it and has an "S" in the diamond, with rounded
corners, on top. Does anyone know what cars had these covers as stock?
From looking at a number of pictures, there does not seem to be a clear
standard. If anything, it seems the earlier cars said "Sunbeam", but
didn't have the "S", or even the raised diamond. Most later cars had a
raised rectangle where the "Sunbeam" goes and the raised diamond, but no
"S". A few later cars, Series IV and on had the valve cover with both.
Also, how does one clean and polish the cover? It cleaned up pretty well
by hand with Softscrub and then some paint polishing compound I have.
But, there are still dark spots or stains on it. Maybe some fine wet/dry
paper then polishing compound? I saw some covers down in San Diego
cleaned up by Smitty. I was told he put a clear coat on them. That
suggests that he also painted the covers. I think the local auto parts
store carries "aluminum" paint. But, I don't know how this will hold up
to heat, and, if I can treat the aluminum, I'd rather do that. Lastly, is
a power polisher really required?
Thanks for any thoughts.
