   Hello,
I am thinking of buying an Alpine GT 1964 (Hardtop only) in white.
It is for sale at GBP 4250 and seems in very solid and good
condition. It is for sale from a classic car garage. It is claimed to
   have had a new gearbox.
   a) Is it worth it?
   b) Will it be as reliable as the trusy old beetle I'm thinking of
   trading in for it?
   c) Are they a 'practical classic'?

Hi,

I have owned a Series II (1962) Alpine for about 6 months and
found it great fun. It is, however, not used daily but I would
have thought that a car in good condition should be able to
stand daily use (assuming you don't do lots of motorway miles
at high speeds). I paid about GBP 4500 for my car which had
undergone a complete restoration some 18 months before. Apart
from the odd mark here and there it is immaculate. You will
pay more buying from a garage but it should be in very good
condition for that sort of money. There should be no
rust anywhere and be mechanically sound. As far as "reliable
as a Beetle", I don't know Beetles that well but they strike
me as very reliable. If you look after an Alpine then you
should have no problems but neglect one and you will end up
paying for it.

Hope that helps.

Dave W.
