For the record the 3.89:1 diff in my minx ( same as alpine, I think )
started to get noisy about 5 years ago after I let it get low on oil. It is
worn gears I'm told but it has been nothing more serious than that. It
whines when under power only. I test drove an alpine 2 years ago which had
a new diff and that was noisy. I understand that it reduces the pleasure of
driving the alpine but I don't think that a whine under power will ever
bring you to a sudden holt.
