Weber Manifold

Jay,

I just got off the phone with Gary Christensen who is the guy that Dick was
talking about earlier. Gary purchased a manifold from TWM about 4 years ago
for a Series V, he had to cut the manifold and put a 14 degree upward angle
to avoid the steering box. While he was cuttting, he adjusted the rear carb.
forward a bit to give him more room for the brake master cylinder which he
removed the spacer from and ground the end off of. This resulted in the
front tube of the rear carb. being a bit longer than the rear tube. He
admits that this is not ideal, however he did get it to work. Gary says that
the Webers do not like to be angled at more than 15 degrees upward or
downward or else the floats etc. are thrown off. This sounds correct to me
and is actually confirmed in a Weber book that I have.

Gary would like to end up with a cleaner setup than what he has, but of
course he doesn't want the same manifold that TWM sold him earlier. He made
several calls to TWM during his modification and TWM reported that he was
their first complaint out of 4 or 5 manifolds sold. Gary later found out
that most of the manifolds had been sold to early cars (Series I & II) and
that the engine bay of these early cars was different enough for the setup to
work. Oh yeah, he also said that he has been able to keep the crossmemeber
in place, however I don't know what type (if any) of air cleaner he is using.
The car is currently in a paint shop across town from me and we are going to
try and get over there in the next couple of weeks so I can take a look at
it.

One other thing, I've been going through the mailing list archive (it has
eaten up all of my 10 free hours on AOL) and came across the following dated
May 25, 1995:

"Wally Smith lives in Beltsville, Maryland.
His phone # is (310) 937-3812.
He is familiar with the differences between the RHD and LHD versions of the
Weber manifolds. He may have some work around experience. ( I'm not sure
about that one - DG) I think one of the guys in Maryland used an early series
master cylinder and other bits to make it work. Give Wally a call. signed
 Tom Calvert"

Jay, have you talked to, or heard of this guy? If not, I think I will give
him a call.

By the way, if Tom Calvert is still out there, maybe you could tell us how
you know Wally, and what his experience is.

Oh yeah, one other thing I found while cruising through the archive was a
note from you back in Sept. '95 saying that your manifold was off a manifold
by Derrington, imported through Cananda in the 60's and 70's. Is that where
TWM got their design?

Has anybody heard of Derrington and are they still in operation?

Until next time,

David
