Regarding Terry's "throwing down the gauntlett":

I found Alpine number 54 in a Columbia, South Carolina wrecking yard two years ago. It's still there and restorable. I believe that an Alpine with a serial number in the single digits was recovered last year by the Alpine Owner's Club of England. If interested I will dig up the exact information and post it for all.
