There is an Alpines mailing list.  I have copied the list on this 
reply.  You will no doubt get some helpful responses back.  To join

you should find helpful.
Based on your description above, it's probably a good thing that you 
didn't buy the one you looked at.  Unless you can get it for almost
nothing, and plan to do a ground up restoration, skip any car that 
needs sill work.  A solid, rust-free body is one of the most 
important, if not the most important, factors to consider when 
purchasing an Alpine.
