Easy! well almost ....
The Hunter engine will fit if you:
1) Take the front engine mounting plate off an Alpine engine and
stick it onto the Hunter one (bolts on behind the timeing chain (forget
the Hunter side mounts - they won't fit).
2) Either change the Webber carbs for Alpine Series V Alpine
Strombergs (not so good) or buy / have straigtened a Holbay carb. manifold
so that the Webers will sit horizontal to the engine (the Hunter manifold
is angled) (better but more expensive) and some how hook up the
accelerator linkage (cable on the Hunter, rods on the Alpine). The Weber
air trumpets may foul the engine bay support strut - some people bend the
strut - others simply use shorter venturi? or none at all.
3) Fit a suitable exhast manifold - the Hunter one fouls the
passenger floor pan I think as it sweeps back too steeply, so try a series
3? 4-2-1 down pipe affair or buy a special one.
4) If you use the Hunter gear box, the lever will stick over
towards the driver (RHD) by some 10 or so degrees. It IS possible to leave
it like that (I have seen one) but you have to cut the tunnel which is not
ggod. You can get it to fit right - I THINK that you have to use the
Alpine gearbox and bell housing BUT non-series V Alpines have a different
number of splines on the primary shaft and so that must be swapped with a
Huner one (messy). I think Series V splines are OK. Use the larger 8.5
inch diameter Holbay clutch.
Standard Holbay engines produced 110bhp at about 5,500 rpm I think.
