The fuel smell might be coming from a leaking hose the connects the two
tanks together. It is located behind the rear panels in the trunk under
the trunk latch.
The "popping out of gear" problem is probably due to worn shift forks
inside the transmission. I had that problem on my Series I and that only
way to fix it is to repair/replace the worn part. In my case, I had a
friend of mine build up the brass by brazing the part and then machining
them back to normal "like new" condition, it worked great. I do think
that these parts are avaiable new but you could buy some slighty used
ones instead.
