Re: Throw-out bearing

Jay,

I had one of these roller bearing throw-out jobs and funny stuff happened
but it is not conclusive. The diaphragm I had for the clutch was a rebuild
so that would have to be suspect.

What happened was that after only a few thousand miles the clutch started to
make noise and after about 10,000 miles it didn't work anymore. The ring on
the centre of the diaphragm had come loose and so the travel of the clutch
slave rod wasn't long enough to dis-engage the clutch.

What I think is that since the throw out bearing on the Alpine "swings" it
moves from being centred on the clutch to being off centre as the clutch is
depressed. The roller bearing throw out spins and since it doesn't spin
around the same point as the clutch it puts unbalanced forces onto it. The
usual carbon bearing does no spinning and therefore puts no "wobble" into
the ring on the diaphragm of the clutch.

When I replaced the clutch I used the carbon bearing and a new clutch (not a
rebuild) and had no trouble for 40,000 miles. (this was all with my Hillman
Minx, but the gearbox and everything is the same).

Merry Christmas to all, (the weather here is sensational at the moment, 28
degrees celcius (mid 80's) perfect for some Alpining)

Anthony.
