So many of you are almost younger than the cars you drive. I'm a 58 (but
a young-looking 58) y.o. University professor. I'm divorced, so I have no
one to prevent me from indulging my car hobby. My woman friend tries, at
times, but she is easily manipulated--when I see a large motorcycle for
sale by the side of the road, I stop and look it over, write down the
owner's phone number, etc. After that, she doesn't say a word about my
messing with old cars. I have been a car nut for at least 53 of my 58
years. I've owned an odd and varied assortment of collector cars, but
many of them were just old cars when I owned them.

For a time, I played with Model A Fords, then I hot rodded a 49 Willys
Jeepster by installing a 283 ci Chevy, then I spent a long and boring
period being (comparatively) sensible. Along the way, I had a few LBCs,
including a 54 Nash Metropolitan convertible and a 60 Anglia 105E. When I
moved to Vermont in 71, I bought a 67 Series V for a second car. I sold
it a few years later in another spurt of sanity and went back to a series
of ordinary cars. In 88 I bought two Bugeye Sprites, and assembled one
completely restored car from the pair. It isn't concours, but it is a
very nice driver. In the fall of 95, I bought another Series V Alpine, an
early one, B395000284 LRX. It had been dry stored for 16 years, and seems
to be pretty sound, though it needs a bit of rust work and complete
restoration. I plan to do a ground up, as soon as I can get my house to a
stopping plce.
