After removing the tappet cover on the side of the engine I noticed two
bolts threaded into the block. What do these do? If I take them out will
something fall out? I looked in the manual but did not see any reference
to them.
The bolts you refer to access the water jackets in the block. I don't
really know what they're for, except maybe for inspection purposes.
