I believe painted was the only way Rootes offered the wire wheel option 
(at least on the early series Alpines).  So a preference for originality 
would be another reason to stick with painted WWs.

I suppose the decision depends a lot on what "fairly expensive" means 
relative to your car.  Best price I found for a basic set of 4 painted 
WWs (Dunlop) came to around $500.  Chrome, or better yet, stainless 
spokes (Dayton) are way higher.  The alternative of having the original 
painted WWs refurbished was 20 to 30% cheaper than new replacements, but 
had the significant disadvantage of leaving you with the old (wheel) 
splines.  Used WWs are often not such a good deal unless they happen to 
be pristine or you have the skill and inclination to rebuild them yourself.
