Be carefull. This is exactly what I did to my old tired Alpine
1592. It had low compression, and drank oil like a two stroke! I
rebuilt the head with new guides milling, and a nice three angle lapped
in valve job that I did myself.. It was a very nice job if I say so
myself. It raised the barely runnable 90psi upto 115-120. I was very
please. It started faster, without the starter spinning it so fast,
idled better, and basically ran better all the way around, although it
was still drinking oil. About three week after I did this. It melted
#3 Piston while going up a hill floored in third. The moltan aluminum
which splashed up on top of the piston was pounded in to the head,
destroying my beutifull work, it also knocked a small chunk of the
cylinder wall in to the water jacket which KO'd the block. Well, that
was fun.
So take my advice. If you do the top end of an old tired
engine, keep in mind that this is going to add stress to the other weak
areas and make them fail sooner. The revived compression was to much
for the old rings and pistons to contain, and so the blow by increased,
and with the big load of floored up a hill, it super heated the piston
and rings and then they all just melted. That was the last time I drove
an Alpine. It never ran again. If you're going to do a little, take
the time to do it all.......It costs much less in the end.
