Ron,
Thanks for the info on Zenith carbs.
From your info (ie roadster has WIP3s, GT has WIA3s) and the fact that the
roadster made more power, it seems the WIPs are the better carb for power -
because of the lack of an "economy" bypass valve and the bigger jet.

My car is a roadster (RRO on the body tag) but has WIAs, so I have incorrect
carbs.
My choices are:
1) Rebuild WIAs & possibly modify jets and bypass valve.
2) Look around for WIPs (& probably rebuild them) Tom W. has offered some
for sale.
3) Fit a non-standard carb that works better than the Zeniths.

I intend to soak up some wisdom before I make any choice. I also need to
rebuild my badly worn linkages.

Cheers,
Paul.

Paul:
Your series III came with 2 WIP 3's OR 2 WIA 3's (GT) A main
difference between the WIA (2 and 3) and the WIP is the "economy
diaphragm" which is located under a small cover with 3 screws and a bump
on top (on the WIA 3) located on top of the float chamber. This
diaphragm comes in a WIA kit.
The WIA 2 (which was used on S. I's and II's) and 3 appears to have an
additional part called the "bypass valve" under the same cover which
does not appear to be in WIA kits and came in two sizes.
The WIP 2, however, has a flat cover called a "blanking cover" and
beneath it, a "blanking plug"(in place of the bypass valve). This
appears to have been an option with the WIA 3's as well.

The above all came from the blow-ups in the 66 Rootes Parts Manual,
and there also appears to be differences in the size of the high speed
bleed jets (and possibly others as well) between WIP 2's and WIA 2's.

I would guess that the diaphragm was intended to operate the valve to
lean out mixture or acc. pump at certain vacuum and produce "economy"
but could be blanked out if you didn't care about economy. Also, the WIA
carb seems to be associated in S. I's and II's with a "Micro Element
Filter" which reQuired a different bypass valve.

This is probably more than you really wanted to know already about WIA
and WIP but let me know if you need jet sizes. (does anyone know where
we can get replacement jets?)
