Steve,

Re: the erratic behavior of your tech depending on electrical load. I would first
suspect a poor ground somewhere. If you have access to a sensitive voltmeter (like
a high input impedance digital voltmeter) probe between the grounded battery
terminal and chassis, between chassis and ground wires, etc to find the bad
connection. Or you can inspect the obvious choices.
