Jarrid, thanks for the link to the website for CA smog. Didn't know that stuff
was out there.
.
I just talked to mechanic again and he did get a weber rebuild kit. I also
found that Rick carries it at Sunbeam Specialties.
I don't believe any fraud is involved here. The station is family run business
several blocks from my house. The mechanic is new, but I know the owner and he
really seems genuinely sorry and is doing his best to help me. The mechanic has
worked on Sunbeams before and if he comes through on this I will be happy to
have found someone close by that can help me with my projects. I have a series
II sitting for several years waiting for some engine work that I never seem to
have time for (or the skill).
I will probably also check out the switch to electronic ignition. I would like
to drive this car more often to work.

I think the retaining nut is 1 1/8 inch ir not then 1 1/16.
You dont need to drain the oil.
You will need a seal puller to get the old one out, I used
an icepick, and really buggered the old seal to get it out.
Clean the surface really well prior to installing the new seal.
Use a non-hardening sealant around the seal for reasembly.
I think the torque is 140 lb ft but check your manual.
