Big end offset....SOS

Greetings all!

Sorry to bombard all my email lists with the same question, but I need some
help!

Scenario: rebuild 78 Midget, 1500 motor just going back together. Connecting
rods are slightly offset...hardly noticeable, but there is a feeler gauge's
difference... Ok, here's the problem:

Haynes manual says to attach pistons to rods making sure that when pistons
face forward, the piston rod cap is facing the cam (which would be left). Ok,
this is easy enough. THEN the book says, while connecting rods to crank, be
sure the 1 and 3 piston/rods have the offset facing one way (front or
back...I'd have to look) and 2 and 4 offset opposite 1 and 3.
First question: the offset is tough to see, but after reexaming the rods, I
finally see it. My problem is, which way are they referring to when they say
offset should be, for example, forward? That is, do they mean that the actual
offset, the side that protrudes goes forward, or the side that is slightly
curved goes forward?

Now, If instructed to put offset towards front of engine, does the hollow side
of the offset face forward or does the protruding side???

Second question. Since, obviously two rods will be inserted opposite from
their mates (ie. Two offsets facing for, two aft), that means to keep the
front of the piston properly situated with arrows facing front, they will then
have to be dissasembled and pistons turned around. This contradicts the
previous step that says that the rod caps should be facing the cam shaft.

Am I doing something wrong here? All the sketches show the rod caps facing
the left side of the engine. Clearly, if two offsets are going to be facing
opposite the other two, then that throws the previous assembly instructions
regarding the rod cap direction right out the window.

What's worse...my Bentley manual contradicts the haynes manual, indicating a
different arrangement for the offset...HELP HELP HELP SOS SOS SOS

Will
(who now has to pull two pistons back out of the block!)
