You use a used "doner" cam that will be machined to spec.
It is my understanding that Iron can not be welded, but then again, I
have seen people specialize in it, so this may not be the case.
If the cam is fairly fresh, and you are not too ambitious about the
specs that you want "like 320 degree cam on 105 degree centers",
the re-grinder will evaluate your cam profile against the desired
profile, and tell you if it can be done. The procedure is to cut
into the cams base circle until the amount of meat in the lobe
section is enough to meet the required cam profle specs.
On my 310 degree cam, the base circle was cut so deep into
the shaft that the machinist had to turn the shaft on a metal
lathe to make the base circle stand off the shaft a little.
>Or does that mean cutting a new cam from steel?
No...
This would be brutally expensive to cut a cam from billet, although
this is done sometimes. The distributor gear must be cut into the
shaft, which is probably the toughest operation.
>Either way, what kind of cost are we talking about?
I recommend you go to an experienced cam grinder, not
a machine shop that says they can grind a cam.
The machine shop will never deliver what you want, nor
be able to reproduce what you bought last time.
I can only recommend Crower and Isky, but it would appear
that Dick T. has worked with Crane as well.
If you go to any other cam grinder, be certain you bring at least
one tappet, becuase they MUST have this to grind the cam to
your specs.
Any grinder that doesnt ask for a tappet, should be avoided like
the plague.
Isky has three standard alpine grinds, and Crower makes to order.
I have two grind #s from Crower, both are my own design but
Crower would be happy to grind one for you.
The cost will be in the $80 to $100 range.
Ramon had one ground at Isky, who also sold him a matching
spring set.
